Instructor Bio

Capoeira is an African-Brazilian martial art deeply rooted in music, dance and culture. Created by African slaves brought to Brazil, Capoeira encompasses unique body movements that one can associate with dances, yoga positions and even animals! Unlike traditional martial arts that tend to be rigid, Capoeira is free-flowing, encourages unique body expression, and is meant to feel like a dance. What also makes Capoeira stand out from other martial arts is that it is not fought, but played instead. A caporista (one who plays Capoeira) does not fight an opponent, but plays a game with a friend. Students learn more than just movements; they learn to play a variety of instruments including hand drums, berimbaus, and tambourines. Students also learn to sing traditional songs in Portuguese. Capoeira allows a person to be themselves. While learning the foundation movements, students can put their own special touch to the movements. Capoeira is silly, fun, challenging, creative and a great workout. The blend of fitness, music, expression, dance and fun make Capoeira a truly enriching experience that goes beyond just mere exercise and self-defense. Capoeira is for everyone regardless of age or fitness level.
